There was one team that had about a 6-4 record the first week of the playoffs and knocked off a higher seed. I can't remember who that was though. But, what's that got to do with consistency? They're a second year school and I'd wager that they're not playing powerhouses. Appalachia and Jonesville both won state titles with 5-5 records. Good thing you weren't doing the picking then.

I remember seeing footage of the William Campbell (14-0) team of 2002 when they played Appy (12-2) and it was just insane at how good they were. Their key running back (Cedric Peerman) could just get the ball and run anywhere he wanted and it usually took no less than 3 guys to take him down each and every play, regardless of where he ran or how he did so.

I was definitely shocked at how good they were, and after seeing them, the 70-0 score definitely didn't seem near as far fetched at first. Hell, when I first saw the final score on Highlights Tonight, I almost passed out because I couldn't believe it, especially after how Appalachia dismantled Bath Co. the week before the 'big game.' I actually thought they had a chance to win it all .. boy was I ever wrong.

There are no teams like that now and they're getting fewer and fewer.

You have to look at the scores for those teams though and look at how closely they played powerhouses and whether or not they were blown out or just got the 'bad end of the stick.'

Most of the time, those teams that have sorry records but that go on to win big have only minor regular season losses and haven't been getting whipped on and just miraculously came out winners. They were there for a reason - they were good, but the record didn't show it.

The reason I'm making comparisons here isn't because I know the scores (and I don't), but I just first look at the record then take the teams to the CalPreps site and match them up to see if their records are reasonable and if the teams aren't actually deceiving just because their record may not match up with the other team's.

I know that CalPreps doesn't always work - and often HASN'T (for me at least!), but I think it's reliable enough to make reasonable estimates about what has yet to occur.

I don't know how many times I have to say this on here before maybe it sinks into someone's head..... YOU CAN'T COMPARE SCORES AND GET ANY KIND OF GUAGE ON TEAMS WHEN THEY PLAY HEAD TO HEAD! Example compare the JJK, PV, and CW scores. By those scores Clintwood should have beaten PV by about 30 some to a couple tds. If you look at PV, GC, CW you'd think that Clintwood would lose to PV by 60. Looking at scores will tell you nothing about a game but will tell everyone else you're a fool. Using Calpreps for anything, will place you in the same boat.

One thing you're not taking into account in your crazy chubzmath, is the fact that Clintwood's best player was hospitalized in the 4th week of the season for a week with a horrible infection and is now starting to look like the player he was when they played Honaker, Coeburn, and Haysi. So in the 4th week when he didn't play they got drilled by what would be a 4A school in VA, lost the next week to the CMD champions with Robinson getting limited carries, got smoked by GC at GC in their "revenge" game, and lost by 10 to the greatest team in single A football by 10.

Oh, I know about the injuries and that Clintwood is probably healthiest at this point .. but it doesn't change the fact that I look at them as very mediocre state title contenders if they somehow make it that far. I hope they surprise me, I really do. But I just can't see it happening.

You also picked PV to beat them 34-6 and then said after Clintwood won "neither team impressed me". How can a team be picked to lose by 4 tds win and completely shut down the other teams offense and not in some form or fashion be somewhat impressive. I don't know about you chubby. You're from a different planet I think. You have many years of valuable knowledge to learn my padawan. Oh, you're talking about Clintwood/Powell Valley now?

That was just Clintwood playing against another horrible spell of Powell Valley's "throw, throw, throw, throw, throw, run" offense in which they (PV) showed great promise in the running game but were close to scoring numerous times only to end up throwing interceptions almost every time and screwing up important drives. Horrible play-calling just like in the most recent PV/GC game.

Let's also not forget that up to that point, Powell Valley was actually playing fairly well and this was before they were beaten by Clintwood and played a surprisingly bad game versus Kelly.

I wasn't impressed by Clintwood because the entire night they were sucking it up on offense. I wasn't impressed by Powell Valley because their offense was also miserable and their defense didn't have a whole lot to worry about with Clintwood's mediocre Offense.

I picked Powell Valley 34-6 because of the way Clintwood was demolished by Volunteer and then beaten pretty badly (28-3) by Lebanon who Powell Valley completely shut down [the running game I'm referring to] just a week or so before.

I was definitely shocked that Clintwood came out winners because I would have never expected it before the game, but afterwards I wasn't so much impressed as I was disappointed that I didn't see a better Powell Valley team with better play-calling. And let's not forget that almost every time Myron P. touched the ball that game (when he DID get to do so), he ran all over Clintwood.

The thing is, I know some people thought Norton would kill Clintwood, but most people from Norton didn't. The general opinion I got from them after the first game was they really didn't want to see Clintwood again. It's not that they were scared of Clintwood, but for the most part, the Clintwood/Norton games are/have been very good games. I believe Burton was averaging around a +4 turnover ratio in those games. You can't do that against a good team. You put yourself in positions where you have to take chances and that normally blows you up against a good team. Clintwood four losses this year. Gate City @ Gate City, Lebanon @ Lebanon, Norton @ Norton and Volunteer @ Volunteer. All 4 were playoff teams.

I'm not saying that Clintwood will win or won't win. I'm saying like I said before that they were a better team than people thought. Remember what they were thought of before the season. If I'm not mistaken, I think Bath County was 2-4 at one point in the season.

I'm talking about PV because it's showing that your picking prowess rivals that of a trained monkey. It's hard to count the number of times that you're either been "amazed", "shocked", or "in disbelief" because of someone's performance or a game didn't go like you thought.

As for Pinkston, uh... no he didn't. He was getting good yardage, most of that was because they were in a three man front. It's easy to get yardage off that, but more than likely you're not going to break anything big. They're playing a 3-4 to limit the pass. I think he had 70-90 yards on about 15 carries. You'll enjoy the game much more when you quit watching the ball, and start seeing the whole field. There is more to football than trying to chunk a ball around the field. There's nothing wrong with defensive football. Clintwood won 3 state titles playing it and had what most folks consider the best teams to ever play in this state.
